What Are You Looking For?

Dear Niles Community Schools Families,

As we move through winter, I want to share a quick update on how we handle weather decisions. The state of Michigan allows us six weather-related closure days each year, and we have already used three. To avoid extending the school year into the summer months, we may use the option of a  2-hour delay when conditions allow.

What a 2-Hour Delay Looks Like

  • School and bus routes start two hours later  (for example, if the bus pick up time is normally 6:00 a.m., your student would now be picked up at 8:00 a.m.)
  • Breakfast and morning programs may be adjusted
  • Dismissal stays at the normal time

Cold Weather & Wind Chill

When evaluating weather, we look at a combination of factors—blowing and drifting snow, ice, road conditions, and whether plows are still operating. We also stay in close contact with other Berrien County districts before making a final call for Niles Community Schools.

All Berrien County superintendents follow a shared guideline:

A sustained wind chill of -20°F may lead to a delay or closure. If temperatures are dangerously cold early in the morning but expected to warm up, a 2-hour delay may be the safer and more practical option.

We will always make decisions with the safety of our students and staff at the forefront while supporting consistent learning for all students. Thank you for your flexibility and understanding as we work through Michigan’s winter weather together.

Go Vikes,

Dr. Adam Burtsfield
