5113 – Admission of Students Participating Under Schools of Choice

The District agrees to consider nonresident students residing in the same intermediate school district for admission under the District’s Schools of Choice Program.

Section 1: Application for Admission & Student Support

  • Commitment to All Learners We believe in the potential of every student. Niles Community Schools does not discriminate against students with disabilities (IDEA or 504). If your child has an IEP or 504 plan, our Director of Special Education will review it alongside the application to ensure we can provide the best possible support for their success.
  • Academic Credits and Placement To ensure your child is placed in the right classes to succeed, our principals personally oversee the awarding of transfer credits and grade assignments. Once your child is accepted, you will need to complete an online enrollment packet.
  • Transportation and Athletics
Athletics: We love our student-athletes! Participation in sports follows the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) and league eligibility standards for transfer students.
Getting to School: Families typically provide transportation to the school or a scheduled in-district bus stop.

Section 2: The Enrollment Process

  1. Timely Notifications We value your planning time. The District will notify you of your student’s enrollment status no later than the end of the first week of school.
  2. Preparing for Your Program We want our students to feel confident from day one. We will provide you with any necessary prerequisites for specific courses of study, so you and your child know exactly what to expect when classes begin.
  3. Maintaining a Safe Community To ensure a positive environment for all, we review the disciplinary history of applicants. Students with a history of suspension (within the last two years) or expulsion will have their application reviewed by the building principal to ensure a successful transition into our school culture.

Section 3: Transfer of Resident Students

  1. Withdrawal Procedures If a resident Niles student is accepted into another district’s Schools of Choice program, we follow standard procedures (AG 5130) to ensure their records are transferred safely and accurately.
  2. Returning to Niles If a resident student wishes to transfer back to their home school during the school year, they are always welcome. We are here to support your child’s educational journey, wherever it leads.
  3. Assessment for Success (AG 5463) If a returning student has experienced academic difficulty, the principal may use AG 5463 (Credit/Placement Assessment) to evaluate the student’s current performance level. This allows us to provide the right academic interventions and ensure they are placed in the best position to catch up and excel.
