Dear Niles Community Schools Families,
The recent stretch of mild weather has been a welcome change, and it’s been great to see students back into a steady routine. As we move through the heart of winter, I want to take a moment to recognize the many positives happening across Niles Community Schools. In classrooms, hallways, and extracurricular spaces, our students continue to show growth, kindness, and resilience, and our staff continues to do outstanding work supporting them every day. Thank you for the partnership you provide at home that makes that possible.
I also want to encourage you to stay connected by visiting our district newsletter. It’s one of the best ways to keep up with student celebrations, building updates, and upcoming events across the district. You can access it here: Niles Community Schools February Newsletter
As a reminder, Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on Wednesday, February 25, 2026 and Thursday, February 26, 2026. These conferences are an important opportunity for families and teachers to connect, celebrate progress, and work together on goals for the remainder of the year.
As of February 20, 2026, Niles Community Schools has used seven (7) snow days this school year. The state provides six (6) days without needing additional approval, which means we are currently one day beyond that initial allowance. We are prepared to apply for a waiver which may allow for additional days to be forgiven. If additional days are needed and a waiver isn’t approved, they will need to be made up at the end of the school year. Given the recent weather trends, we’re optimistic we won’t add many more days but we want families to know exactly where things stand.
Even with nicer weather, conditions can still change quickly. As a reminder, when a two-hour delay is called, school begins two hours later than normal and buses run approximately two hours later as well. Morning supervision and breakfast service follow the adjusted schedule, and we encourage families to plan for slower traffic during drop-off. As always, we will communicate school closures and delays as early as possible through our normal channels, including district messages, social media, and local media outlets.
Thank you again for your continued support of Niles Community Schools. We appreciate our partnership and look forward to finishing the school year strong together.
Sincerely,
Dr. Adam Burtsfield
Superintendent
