Building a Strong Foundation at Ballard Elementary
Kinder Connections is a unique readiness program designed to bridge the gap between preschool and kindergarten. It’s not just a “slowed-down” kindergarten or “advanced” preschool—it is a specifically blended curriculum created to ensure your child starts their school career with confidence.

We focus on preparing “KC Learners” to be fully proficient in first-quarter kindergarten skills by the end of the year. Our program offers:
- Smaller Class Sizes: More one-on-one time for every child.
- Extra Support: An Instructional Assistant in every classroom.
- Whole-Child Growth: We develop social, emotional, motor, and academic skills through exploration and play-based learning.
Note: All Kinder Connections students move on to regular kindergarten the following school year, entering the classroom with a “head start” on success.
How Enrollment Works
Can I choose this program for my child? Placement in Kinder Connections is based on the results of our District Kindergarten Screening. This ensures every child is placed in the environment that best matches their current developmental level.
Kindergarten Screening: What to Expect
Every incoming kindergartener is screened in August to help us provide the most positive start possible.
- Register: Sign up for screening when you enroll your child. If you register online, our staff will send you an email for you to schedule an appointment.
- The Assessment: We use a friendly, research-based tool aligned with Michigan Core Standards.
- The Skills: We look at 15 different areas, including auditory (listening) and basic writing skills.
- Placement: Following the screening, we will determine if Kinder Connections or traditional Kindergarten is the best fit for your learner.
